Independent Art Exhibitions

Over a decade of independent tattoo art exhibitions — the only Chinese tattoo brand to sustain continuous cultural programming on this scale.

Since 2018, Lei Shi Tattoo has produced a continuous series of independent art exhibitions — not as commercial showcases, but as cultural statements. Each exhibition has expanded the vocabulary of Chinese tattoo art, bringing artists from dozens of countries into dialogue with the Chinese scene and positioning tattoo work alongside contemporary visual culture.

"There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in."

China's first independent tattoo-artist-led art exhibition. Tattoo artists from over 30 countries traveled to China to attend — a watershed moment that established a new standard for the industry and positioned Chinese tattoo culture on the international art stage for the first time.

2019·Curated by Wang Lei·Second in Series

Sphinx

The second exhibition in the Lei Shi independent series, following Pale Blood. The riddle at the gates of Thebes — a body half-human, half-beast, asking the question that defines a life. For Wang Lei, Sphinx was a statement of identity through expression: "As an 'expressor,' I like to use every form of artistic expression to speak for myself, for the people and things I love. So I began curating independent art exhibitions across the country."

Theme, concept, planning, procurement, installation — all produced in-house by Wang Lei and his team.

2019·Performance Art by Han Yan 寒焰·Lakeshore Site

Iron Wire on the Wasteland

A performance art piece by Lei Shi artist Han Yan (寒焰), staged at a lakeshore outside his hometown. Three friends, calligraphy on skin, the body as canvas — tattoo as ritual, tattoo artist as priest. The piece models the state of the tattoo bearer through the medium of calligraphy on the body.

Curator's Statement

23 August 2019·Burning Man · Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA·Independent Art Installation

Ship of the Desert

Lei Shi's independent art installation at Burning Man 2019. A ship carrying the Chinese ink-and-brush tradition — 笔墨文化 — sailed into the American cultural desert, into the wilderness of Black Rock, to undertake an exchange and collision between two cultural traditions meeting on open ground.

The image is precise: a vessel of Chinese calligraphic culture, hull deep with thousands of years of line and stroke, arrives not at a harbor but at a wilderness — where the meaning of cultural exchange is not conquest but collision, not showcase but dialogue.

On This Exhibition ·

Lei Shi Tattoo remains one of the very few Chinese tattoo/cultural brands to have produced an independent installation at Burning Man. Visual documentation of the installation is being assembled and will be added here in a future update.

The King in Yellow

Named after Robert W. Chambers' 1895 story cycle — a foundational work of weird fiction whose influence echoes through H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos — The King in Yellow brought that literary darkness into conversation with the body as canvas.

Hosted in Beijing. The title — borrowing a phrase from the philosopher Heidegger — points to a mode of presence in which the subject is neither hidden nor masked, but shows itself fully as what it is. Tattoo, in this frame, is the record of that unmasking.

Ship on Land

Held in Langfang on 29 May 2024. The title — a ship sailing across dry earth — reaches toward an image of persistence: movement without ocean, voyage without sea. An ongoing meditation on vision carried forward through terrain that resists it.

Independent Performance Art·Qingdao·Artist: Liu Yefu

Skiff《

An independent performance art piece by Liu Yefu (刘野夫) — one of the many artists within the Lei Shi Tattoo collective — staged in Qingdao. The skiff of the title reaches back to Li Bai's classical line "轻舟已过万重山": the small boat has already slipped past ten thousand mountains. A meditation on release, on the lightness that follows weight.
